  • ‘How to follow directions in Section 2’  (Fiddy Farm)

Scroll down to find the section on labelling a map (Q17 – Q20)

12. Friday/Sunday – The island is only open to the public from Friday to Sunday, because it’s quite small, and if there were people around every day, much of the wildlife would keep away

Answers and explanations (Q14-16)

14. As part of Mondays activity, visitors will

C dye cloth with herbs

You’ll start with a tour of our herb garden, practise the technique of using them as colour dyes for cloth.

15. For the activity on Wednesday.

B visitors should book in advance.

We keep to a small number of people in the group, so if you want to go you’ll need to phone the park ranger a few days ahead.

16. For the activity on Saturday, visitors should

A come in suitable clothing.

One thing, though, is to make sure you’re wearing something that you don’t mind getting dirty or torn.

IELTS Listening map labelling

Map labelling and following directions tips:

  • Make sure you find where you are (find ‘You are here’)
  • Quickly check the main locations (Car Park, New Barn, Fish Pool etc)
  • Make sure you have found ALL the letters (e.g. here the letter ‘A’ is off the main picture)
  • Write on the map as you listen. Quickly write e.g.‘Scarecrow’ – don’t worry about spelling because you don’t need to write this word down on the answer paper.
  • Also, don’t worry if you don’t know what the words mean e.g. ‘maze’. Just listen for the word and write it where you find it!
  • Before the test, practise the language of directions (e.g. ‘Turn Left’ ‘Go straight on’ ‘It’s opposite/next to…’ etc.).

Watch the video for my tips on how to label a map.

  1. Listen for the ‘2-part’ instruction. The first half of the statement gives you the general location to guide your eye e.g. ‘in the western section’ and the second part of the statement gives you a more precise location ‘between two paths’.
  2. There will often be 2 options in a similar location, so you need to listen to BOTH parts of the instruction to avoid the distractor (the trick).
